Notes: Central Union's history extends back to the original Seaman's Bethel Chapel, built in 1833 to serve the spiritual needs of American merchant seamen visiting Honolulu Harbor. When fire destroyed the Chapel in 1886, a merger with Fort Street Congregational, organized in 1852 for English-speaking residents, established Central Union at Beretania and Richards, now the present site of Hawaii's new State Capitol.
The present sanctuary of familiar new England Colonial architecture,
designed by the Boston firm of Cram and Ferguson, was completed in
1924 on 8 1/2 acres owned by the Dillingham family, originally purchased
for $100,000 but now valued at millions of dollars. Membership of the
church is now 3,000, with seating for 2,000. More than 300 weddings
take place at Central Union annually. Side doors to the sanctuary and
adjacent Atherton Chapel may be opened during summer services to permit
the tradewinds to provide an outdoor atmosphere, thus giving the church
a name often used to describe this cool and pleasant condition, "The Church in the Garden." Central
Union Church is the largest UCC congregation west of the Mississippi.
