Notes: The August 1951 issue of The Diapason states:
"The cornerstone of the new edifice of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church was laid by President Truman April 3. President Lincoln worshipped in the original edifice. The new building is on a site two blocks from the White House. The general structure follows closely the old one and for reasons of sentiment, the dimensions of the organ spaces necessarily limit the completion of the Pedal organ at this time. The rebuilt organ will be installed in an elevated space at the rear of the church and the detached
movable console will be placed toward the front of the organ gallery." William Watkins was organist of the church at this time.
According to the OHS E M SKINNER/AEOLIAN-SKINNER OPUS LIST, compiled by Allen Kinzey and Sand Lawn, the first known organ was 1873 Hutchings, Plaisted Op. 38. It was rebuilt by John Brown and later by Ernest M. Skinner & Son. In 1948, the church signed a contract with Aeolian-Skinner for additions to the existing instrument, retaining the Antiphonal; the additions are noted on the above stoplist by (1149) shown after the pipecount. In 1951 a contract was signed as 1149-A for partial rebuilding for installation into a new building. An Austin console was added in 1976. Lawless & Associates later added a Positiv and made additional changes.
