The dedicatory recital was played by Frederick Johnson on June 14, 1940.
The organ became virtually unplayable in later years due to disuse.
In 1990 the organ was moved by Thad Outerbridge to Trinity Episcopal Church,
Haverhill MA, to replace Aeolian-Skinner Op. 853, a
3/37 that was badly damaged by fire in 1969. The unburned portion of 853
was rebuilt as a home organ. See the OHS OPUS LIST for further details on
853.
When Mr. Outerbridge moved 998 to Haverhill, it was decided to make no tonal
alterations other than regulation. In the course of the move, certain
reservoirs were restored, the console releathered and a new blower installed.
A solid-state digital multi-level system replaced the electro-pneumatic
mechanical memory system for combination pistons. The chest actions are
still playing on their original leather as of 1998.
