A large brick church atop Nob Hill was opened in 1860 and an 1862 2-manual organ was eventually rented from Joseph Mayer for a short time. A 2-manual tracker organ of unknown pedigree was installed after the rental. It, in turn, was replaced in 1894 by a 3-manual James E. Treat & Co. (Methuen, Mass.) organ that served until the church and organ were destroyed by the great earthquake and fire of 1906. A temporary structure was built at Sacramento and Taylor Streets and a 2-manual built by Thomas Whalley was installed. Meanwhile, the site of the former Charles Crocker mansion atop Nob Hill was donated for land on which to build a new facility. The crypt was ready in early 1914 and a 3-manual 43-stop Austin, Op. 472, was installed at a cost of $17,000. In 1929, the Chapel of Grace was completed and a 2-manual Aeolian, Op. 1783, was installed. (It was rebuilt by Aeolian-Skinner as Op. 1151 in 1951 and still serves as a 2/18.) The Austin organ in the crypt was used until 1933, when most of the crypt was razed; the organ was placed in storage and finally broken up for parts in 1957. The gift of Mrs. Harriet Crocker Alexander, Op. 910 was installed in the still-uncompleted church in 1934. It was divided in large elaborate cases on both sides of the chancel. In 1952, Aeolian-Skinner made some changes and additions, as well as minor tonal revisions, under the direction of G. Donald Harrison. In 1968, Ruffatti built a new 5-manual console, utilizing the existing console shell. In 1972 Casavant added a Bombarde division in a comparatively simple case over the altar and Gallery manual and pedal divisions were installed, appropriately enough, in the gallery.
