Stambaugh, who died January 4, 1919, left a large part of his fortune to five trustees for the purpose of building in the city of Youngstown, a growing manufacturing center, an auditorium for the use and benefit of the people of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley. Mr. Stambaugh was philanthropic late in life, was devoted to attempting to better the condition of those less fortunately situated. He had spent his entire life in Youngstown, where for many years he was interested in the iron and steel business. "The auditorium, which is on Fifth Avenue opposite Wicks Park, was started in the spring of 1925 and will be completed probably by November. Helmle & Corbett, New York City, are the architects. The main auditorium will seat about 2,700 people. The exterior of the building, as well as a large part of the interior, will be Indiana limestone. In the basement will be an exhibition hall 92 by 110 feet." Restored by A. Thompson Allen Co. 2010-2011. External Link: Stambaugh Auditorium |
