Optional Events (before OPENING CONVENTION CONCERT at 8 PM)
- There are choices! First is a coach trip to tour both the Norman Rockwell Museum and the Daniel Chester French Estate near Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Rockwell was a 20th century American painter and illustrator whose works reflect the American culture of his day. French was a sculptor who is best known for his statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C. The day will include a lunch.
- Second choice is a self-guided walking tour of the Springfield Quadrangle, which is a short distance from the Marriott Hotel. The Quadrangle is a grassy common with four museums and one library: Springfield Science Museum; Springfield History Library & Archives; Museum of Fine Arts; George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum; and the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden.
- At 5 PM, we all can gather for Evensong at Christ Church Cathedral, immediately adjacent to the Quadrangle and walking tour. We will have time for supper on our own before the opening convention recital, by Christopher Houlihan at 8 PM, at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, also near the Quadrangle.

Extra Convention (“Optional”) Day
- This is another day of “must see” instruments! The Pioneer Valley is rich with organ history and legacy, offering us an extra day filled with sights and sounds that just cannot be omitted from our convention schedule.
- The day begins with two ancient (both 1840’s) E. & G.G. Hook, G-compass organs, hearing Lubbert Gnodde in Northfield, Massachusetts and sneaking into New Hampshire to hear David Sears and Permelia Singer-Sears. We move next to the picturesque campus of the Northfield Mt. Hermon School, overlooking the Connecticut River, where we will hear the iconic Andover organ with Rhonda Sider Edgington at the console, following our luncheon under a tent on the grounds.
- Meg Irwin-Brandon will perform on our second Richards, Fowkes & Co. instrument of the convention, at the First Church in historic Old Deerfield. After the recital, we’ll have a short time to take a walk (or a coffee or other indulgence) in the village.
- Our final recital of the day will be in the very New England town (newly a city) of Easthampton, where we’ll hear Dan Romero demonstrate the 1902 J.W. Steere & Son organ. Then, it’s back to the Marriott Hotel, Springfield, where we can take some time to refresh and relax before our concluding dinner, reviewing with our OHS friends all the stimulating events of the past days!
