Instruments Home Hotel Accommodations Schedule Registration

Dear Friends,

I want to invite you to join us in Washington, DC from Monday June 27 through Saturday, July 2, 2011 for an exciting OHS Convention. We are able to offer a wide range of colorful and historic pipe organs for your enjoyment whose history spans the era from the late 18th century to the present era. Many of these instruments are well known to local OHS members who form the Hilbus Chapter, named after an early local organ builder, and these beloved organs enjoy a sort of OHS "stamp of approval" of many years' standing. Some were featured during the 1964 OHS Convention held in our area. Rather than give you driving directions as was the case at that now distant time, you will be able to tour our area in sleek air conditioned coaches. Most of the churches are air conditioned, an added comfort. There are also innumerable points of interest in our town, many within a short trip of the hotel. The hotel is conveniently located near local transportation for those who wish to explore.

Most importantly come join us for a week of splendid music presented by many talented musicians. Come celebrate our community's artistic heritage of fine pipe organs while you enjoy the warm hospitality which our region has to offer to visitors. I and the 2011 OHS Convention Committee look forward to greeting you personally this June!

Warm regards,

Carl Schwartz, Chair

Washington National Cathedral
E.M. Skinner & Son (1938)

The Organ Historical Society 2011 convention will open formally Monday evening with a recital by rising star Nathan Laube playing the IV/189 Great organ at Washington National Cathedral. Originally built by E.M. Skinner & Son in 1938, it was later enlarged by Aeolian-Skinner. Further modified by others, it continues to thrill lovers of organ music. The 1964 OHS Convention opened here with a recital by Paul Callaway.

Grand Choeur Dialogué, recorded in 1976, just after this magnificent instrument was enlarged to its present 189 ranks. Paul Callaway was organist/ choirmaster at the cathedral from 1939 to 1976.
